There are trees, and then there are trees. The ancient coast live oak that has shaded the same hillside for 300 years. The massive California sycamore whose canopy covers a quarter acre of a Malibu estate. The heritage fig that was planted by the original owners of a Montecito property and has outlasted three generations of the family.
These trees are categorically different from the rest of the landscape. They cannot be replaced. Their loss — to disease, construction damage, or poor care — is permanent. Yet they're also among the most misunderstood trees in any landscape, because their size and apparent permanence creates a false sense that they can take care of themselves.
In reality, the largest and oldest trees on your property often require the most thoughtful, specialized care.
What Makes a Tree a "Heritage" or "Champion" Tree?
The terms are used in overlapping but distinct ways.
A heritage tree is broadly defined as a tree of significant age, size, historical association, or ecological value. Many municipalities in our region — including the City of Malibu, Ventura County, and various incorporated cities throughout LA County — have formal heritage tree ordinances that protect certain specimens from removal and regulate pruning. Before any work on a large, old tree, it's worth checking whether local ordinances apply.
A champion tree is a more specific designation used by organizations like American Forests, which maintains a National Register of Champion Trees recognizing the largest known specimen of each species in the United States. California has numerous champion-designated trees, particularly among native species.
For our purposes as arborists, we consider any tree that is notably large, old, or historically significant a heritage specimen deserving of elevated care standards.
The Unique Vulnerabilities of Old Trees
Understanding why old trees need specialized care requires understanding how they differ from younger trees.
- Root zone compaction. Mature trees have extensive root systems — often extending two to three times the radius of the canopy — that are highly sensitive to soil compaction. Foot traffic, vehicle parking, and construction activity over the root zone compresses the soil pores that roots need for oxygen and water. Over time, compacted soil slowly suffocates the root system. The damage is invisible until the tree begins to decline, often years after the compaction occurred.
- Decay and structural compromise. Old trees accumulate wounds over their lives — broken branches, past pruning cuts, storm damage, disease. Wood decay fungi colonize these wounds, creating internal cavities and decay columns that may not be visible from the outside. A tree can appear perfectly healthy while carrying significant internal structural defects that make it a risk in high winds.
- Reduced vigor. As trees age, their growth rate slows and their capacity to compartmentalize wounds — to wall off damage and decay — diminishes. An injury that a young tree might seal off quickly can become a significant problem in an old specimen.
- Sensitivity to change. A heritage tree that has grown in stable conditions for decades can be surprisingly sensitive to changes in its environment — altered drainage patterns, nearby construction, removal of companion trees that have provided protection from wind, or changes in irrigation. What seems like a minor landscape modification can trigger decline in an old tree that has been in equilibrium with its environment for generations.
The Most Common Threats
- Construction and renovation. This is, in my experience, the single greatest threat to heritage trees on private property. Trenching for utilities, foundation work, grading, compaction from heavy equipment — all within the root zone — can be fatal, and the effects often don't appear until one to three years after the damage occurred. By that point, the construction project is long finished and the connection is difficult to make.
If you are planning any construction near a significant tree, engage an arborist on staff before work begins. A tree protection plan, established well in advance, can preserve a heritage tree through even major construction projects. - Improper pruning. Topping — the practice of cutting large branches back to stubs — is one of the most harmful things that can be done to any tree, but it is particularly damaging to old specimens. The large wounds created by topping cuts rarely seal properly in old trees, becoming entry points for decay that can compromise structural integrity over years or decades.
Proper pruning of a heritage tree is a skilled, conservative operation: removing dead, diseased, and structurally hazardous wood while preserving the tree's natural architecture. It is not reduction for the sake of reduction. - Grade changes. Raising the grade (adding soil) over the root zone is one of the most reliably fatal things you can do to an old oak or sycamore. Even a few inches of added soil over the root zone can suffocate the fine feeder roots and begin a decline that's difficult to reverse. Conversely, lowering the grade and exposing previously covered roots is also damaging.
- Irrigation changes. Old trees adapted to the natural rainfall cycle of their site can be severely stressed by changes in irrigation — either the introduction of regular summer irrigation (particularly damaging to native oaks) or the sudden cessation of supplemental irrigation they've come to depend on.
What Proper Heritage Tree Care Looks Like
- Annual professional inspection. An arborist on staff should walk around the tree once a year and assess its structural integrity, overall health, and any new developments — new decay, recent wounds, changes in the canopy density. Many problems are easily managed when caught early.
- Soil management. Aeration of the root zone using compressed air tools (air spading), application of compost and mycorrhizal amendments, and mulching the entire root zone with 3–4 inches of coarse wood chips can dramatically improve soil biology and root health.
- Structural support. Where internal decay or structural defects create the risk of branch or stem failure, cabling and bracing systems can be installed to provide supplemental support without removing the wood. These systems must be designed and installed by a qualified arborist and inspected annually.
- Conservation pruning. Removing dead wood, crossing branches, and any structurally compromised limbs improves both safety and the tree's health. All cuts should follow ANSI A300 pruning standards.
- Root zone protection. Establish a permanent root protection zone around the tree — ideally fenced or marked to prevent vehicle parking, soil compaction, and grade changes. For very significant trees, this zone should extend to the full dripline or beyond.
The Value You're Protecting
Heritage trees add measurable value to real estate — studies consistently show that mature trees increase property values by 10–20% or more. But their value goes beyond the financial. They are living connections to the history of a place, irreplaceable once lost, and worth the care and investment required to keep them healthy and safe.
