In Southern California, drought stress is one of the leading causes of tree mortality. However, mature trees rarely die directly from a lack of water. Instead, drought stress weakens the tree's natural defenses, making it highly vulnerable to secondary invaders like bark beetles, borers, and opportunistic fungal diseases.
Because large trees have extensive root systems, they can often survive on stored reserves for months. By the time a homeowner notices the canopy turning brown, the tree may have been suffering for a year or more. Early identification is critical to saving the tree.
The most immediate sign of acute water stress. Leaves lose their turgor pressure and droop during the heat of the day. If they don't recover by early morning, the soil is critically dry.
The edges (margins) of the leaves turn brown and crispy while the center remains green. This indicates water cannot reach the furthest extremities of the leaf tissue.
Trees may exhibit autumn-like colors (yellowing or browning) and drop their leaves in mid-summer. This is a survival mechanism to reduce water loss through transpiration.
New growth in the spring appears stunted. The leaves are significantly smaller than normal, and overall canopy density is reduced.
Ironically, the symptoms of drought stress and overwatering look almost identical above ground. Why? Because overwatering drowns the roots, preventing them from absorbing oxygen and water. The canopy wilts and turns yellow because it isn't getting water—even though the tree is sitting in mud.
This is why guessing can be fatal. If you assume a yellowing tree is thirsty and add more water to an already drowning root system, you will quickly kill the tree. A Certified Arborist can perform soil probing to accurately determine moisture levels in the root zone.
It varies by species, but large mature trees may not show visible signs of drought stress for months or even years after the initial deprivation. By the time the canopy turns brown, the root system has already been severely compromised.
If caught early, yes. However, applying too much water too quickly to a severely stressed tree can actually drown the remaining roots. Rehydration must be done slowly and deeply through deep root watering.
