Question 1

How often should my trees be trimmed?

Accepted Answer

It depends entirely on the species, age, and location of the tree. Fast-growing species like Eucalyptus may need pruning every 1-2 years, while mature Oaks should only be pruned every 3-5 years. Over-pruning is a common mistake that can permanently damage a tree.

Question 2

What is the best time of year to prune trees in Southern California?

Accepted Answer

For most deciduous trees, winter (during dormancy) is ideal. However, certain species like Citrus should be pruned in spring after the danger of frost has passed. Dead, diseased, or hazardous branches should be removed immediately, regardless of the season.

Question 3

Do I need a permit to remove a tree?

Accepted Answer

In many Southern California cities (including Malibu, Thousand Oaks, and Santa Barbara), yes. Protected species like Coast Live Oaks, Sycamores, and historical trees often require an Arborist Report and city approval before removal or significant pruning.

Question 4

What is Plant Health Care (PHC)?

Accepted Answer

Plant Health Care is a proactive, science-based approach to maintaining tree health. Instead of just trimming branches, PHC focuses on soil biology, root health, disease prevention, and proper nutrition to keep trees thriving.

Question 5

How do I know if my tree is sick?

Accepted Answer

Common warning signs include yellowing leaves, premature leaf drop, dieback (dead branches at the top of the canopy), fungal growth on the trunk or roots, and visible insect activity. If you notice any of these, schedule an arborist evaluation.

Question 6

Can a dying tree be saved?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the cause and extent of the decline. If caught early, many issues like nutrient deficiencies or minor pest infestations can be treated. However, severe root rot or advanced structural decay usually requires removal for safety.

Question 7

What is an ISA Certified Arborist?

Accepted Answer

An ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) Certified Arborist is a professional who has passed a comprehensive examination covering all aspects of tree care and must maintain their certification through continuing education. They are experts in tree biology, diagnosis, and proper maintenance.

Question 8

Are you licensed and insured?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Arborist Crew Services is fully licensed, bonded, and insured, including Workers' Compensation and substantial liability coverage specifically for high-value estates and commercial properties.
